All Aboard the Express

Hogwarts express

There are theme parks you visit. And then there are theme parks that become part of your story.

For me, Universal Studios Florida is more than just a park. It’s where I started a new magical chapter in my life, on board the Hogwarts Express, no less. I didn’t just board a train to Hogsmeade that day. And no, I didn’t need Felix Felicis to know I was making the right choice.

So grab your wand, tuck in that map of the Wizarding World, and let’s take a stroll through the park that helped write one of the best plot twists in my personal rom-com.

A Proposal Worthy of a Portkey

Time turning back to 2014. The Hogwarts Express had just opened, connecting Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida with Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure. As long time Harry Potter fans, my now-wife and I couldn’t resist being some of the first Muggles to step aboard.

We’d spent the morning wandering through Diagon Alley, buying our interactive wands at Ollivanders, sampling Butterbeer (frozen, always frozen), and even escaping from Gringotts on one of the best Universal Studios rides. It was the kind of day you bottle up like a memory in a Pensieve.

Little did she know, I was about to turn a this train ride into our own epic story. Midway through the journey, between the shadowy silhouette of the Dementor and the flicker of Hedwig in the corridor, I popped the question.

Spoiler alert: She did say yes (although probably regretted every day since). And thankfully, didn’t hit me with a Stupefy in surprise.

We stepped off the train not just as theme park tourists, but as fiancés. And even now, every time I see that scarlet engine steaming at King’s Cross Station, I remember the butterflies in my stomach, part nerves, part excitement, and maybe part Pumpkin Juice.

Why This Park Still Casts a Spell on Me

While the engagement was the highlight of that trip, Universal Studios Florida has always had a special kind of magic, one that’s equal parts nostalgia, movie magic, and pure escapism.

From the Hollywood backlot vibe to the live shows and iconic attractions, this park is a blockbuster tribute to all things film, television, and imagination. And it’s not just about thrill rides (though we’ll get to those in a second). It’s about moments, like watching your child’s face light up when they meet The Minions, or shout ‘hurry dad we need to help ET”.

Must-Do Attractions

Ok enough mushy stuff, let’s talk rides.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley

Gringotts outside ride

This is hands-down the best land of any of the parks. Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts blends coaster thrills with dark ride immersion so well, it’s almost unfair to other attractions. And the level of detail in the land, from the howler in the post office window to the fire-breathing Ukrainian Ironbelly atop Gringotts, it makes every visit feel brand new.

Top Tip: Knock on the door at 12 Grimmauld Place. You might just catch a glimpse of Kreacher pulling back the curtain. It’s these little details that make the park truly magical.

E.T. Adventure

Et ride sign

The last remaining original attraction from Universal’s early days. It’s old school. A heartwarming,, must-do for anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or just needs to hear E.T. say their name. It’s one of the few family rides at Universal Studios and a family favourite.

Men in Black Alien Attack

Men in black 1

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve trained with MIB agents. There’s nothing quite like arguing over who really hit the bonus target, or dramatically losing to your partner, who now has bragging rights and then gets to pick the next snacking spot.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Universal studios rip it rocket

This is one for the brave. Pick your own soundtrack, shoot straight up into the sky, and hope your sunglasses are in a locker somewhere safe. My go-to track? “Kickstart My Heart.” Fitting, right?

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

Dispicalbe me

A family ride where you’re turned into a Minion… because nothing says “vacation” like chaos and banana related near-death experiences. There are static seats at the front for guests with children under the height requirement, so it’s perfect if you’re still recovering from that Mummy ride. Gru, the girls, and an army of oddly adorable Minions make this a must for families and fans of organised mayhem.

Illumination’s Villian-Con Minion Blast

Villancon

It’s part ride, part game, and entirely a chance to prove you’re villain material (while probably getting beat by a 6-year-old). You stand on a moving walkway, blasting targets with a blaster that looks like something Gru bought on clearance at EvilCo.

Fast and Furious Supercharged

Fast supercharge

You’re invited to a street race party but end up in the middle of a high-speed chase… inside a party bus. It’s all about family (cue Dominic Toretto’s gravelly voice), but to be honest, I mostly miss the Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue that this ride replaced. RIP to singing monsters and hello to digital Vin Diesel

Kang and Kodos ‘Twirl ’n’ Hurl

Twril n hurl

An intergalactic spin ride hosted by The Simpsons’ favourite alien duo. You board a flying saucer, spin around, and “hurl” (hopefully just metaphorically).

The Simpsons Ride

The simpsons ride

It’s a motion simulator through the chaotic Krustyland theme park, which feels suspiciously familiar to anyone who’s ever made rope drop with three toddlers. Loud, wild, and full of in-jokes for Simpsons fans.

Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy fallon

A 3D simulator ride through NYC in the Tonight Rider. There’s a flying theatre and a dancing panda. It’s cheesy, quirky and great if you need a break and some A/C.

Revenge of the Mummy

The mummy

A dark ride and indoor coaster hybrid that’s equal parts ancient curse and adrenaline shot. Brendan Fraser’s finest work? Debatable. But asking for his coffee in the finale? Iconic. If you like sudden drops, fire effects, and screaming, this one’s for you.

Transformer The Ride-3D

Transformers

It’s like being inside a Michael Bay movie, with less risk of actually being exploded. Join Optimus Prime and the Autobots in saving Earth (again) on this high-speed, 3D battle through city streets

Trolls Trollercoaster

This pint sized coaster is perfect for little ones finding their coaster feet (or for adults who just want to feel like a giant for once). Bright, cheerful, and full of glitter, it’s basically a playlist of smiles. And yes, you will get the songs stuck in your head.

The Bourne Stuntacular

Bourne show sign

Think live theatre, then sprinkle a little “CIA operative crashes through a window on a moving motorcycle”. This stunt show blends cutting-edge tech, jaw-dropping action, and just enough Jason Bourne brooding. With seamless screen to live action transitions, explosions, stunts and gun fire. it’s part Hollywood blockbuster, part theme park wizardry. If you ever wondered what it feels like to literally sit in the middle of an action scene, this is it.

Hidden Gems and Magical Moments

The big attractions get all the attention, but Universal Studios is packed with smaller experiences worth seeking out:

  • Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees: Don’t miss this live performance in Diagon Alley. •
  • Knockturn Alley: Blink and you’ll miss the entrance to this shadowy corridor off Diagon Alley. Great for cooling off (literally and atmospherically), it’s also where you’ll find Borgin and Burkes and some very dark artefacts and lots of Easter Eggs.
  • The Blues Brothers Show: It’s got a vibe. Grab a snack, listen to some live music, and enjoy some old-school charm between thrill rides.

Let’s Talk Food: Worth the Calories

You can’t build lifelong memories on an empty stomach. Universal Studios Florida delivers on the eats front, and not just in the Wizarding World.

  • Leaky Cauldron: Classic British fare with a magical twist. The Toad in the Hole is a personal favourite, because where else are you going to find Yorkshire pudding in a theme park?
  • Louie’s Italian Restaurant: A slice of The Godfather in the middle of a theme park. The pizza? Surprisingly solid.
  • The Today Café: Perfect for breakfast or lunch. Their roasted turkey avocado sandwich is the underrated star of the menu.
  • Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour: You haven’t lived until you’ve tried Butterbeer soft serve.

A Place Where Your Story Can Begin

Whether you’re planning a grand proposal or just a magical day with the family, Universal Studios Florida is full of potential plot twists. It’s immersive, imaginative, and deeply personal in a way that only the best theme parks can be.

Every time we return, I find new details. A new window to peer into at Diagon Alley. A different wand motion I hadn’t tried. A Butterbeer variant I hadn’t tasted yet (hot Butterbeer in winter? You had me at Butterbeer).

But nothing compares to that moment on the train. That moment is frozen in time, like a moving photograph in the Daily Prophet.

We all have a park that means something extra. For some, it’s where the kids first met Mickey. For me? It’s where I asked my best friend to be part of me Always. And no matter how many new lands, parks or rides Universal adds, that train ride through the Scottish countryside will always be my favourite attraction.
