Current and Upcoming Ride Closures at Magic Kingdom (May–October 2025)

Magic Kingdom is undergoing a series of refurbishments and updates to enhance guest experiences. Here’s a comprehensive look at the attractions currently closed or scheduled for maintenance in the next six months:

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Status: Closed since January 6, 2025
  • Expected Reopening: Early-to-mid 2026
  • Details: This wildest ride in the wilderness is undergoing a full refurbishment, including new effects, upgraded scenes, and possible storytelling enhancements. Word is, a few surprises may tie into the larger Frontierland expansion. Saddle up… just not for a while.
Astro Orbiter
  • Status: Closed since January 13, 2025
  • Expected Reopening: Summer 2025
  • Details: The classic spinner has been taken down for a top-to-bottom overhaul. While Disney’s keeping tight-lipped, expect smoother motion, refreshed visuals, and possibly a new launch experience when it returns to Tomorrowland’s skyline.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • Status: Scheduled to close in August 2025
  • Expected Reopening: Early 2026
  • Details: Star Command has ordered a full systems upgrade. Expect new ride vehicles, improved targeting blasters (finally!), and upgraded sound and lighting effects. Space Ranger recruits: your aim is about to get a lot better.
The Hall of Presidents
  • Status: Closed since January 20, 2025
  • Expected Reopening: Late 2025
  • Details: This historic attraction is receiving its routine update following the 2024 U.S. election. Alongside the addition of the newly elected president, there’s likely to be some freshened-up audio-animatronics and technology tweaks.
Tom Sawyer Island & Liberty Square Riverboat
  • Status: Expected to close permanently by the end of 2025
  • Expected Reopening: Not returning
  • Details: These two scenic experiences are rumoured to be closing for good as part of a broader land reimagining. The Rivers of America may soon become home to an entirely new story, with the Cars-themed area reportedly revving up to replace this space.

Remember: refurbishment schedules can shift faster than a monorail on turbo. For the latest official info, check the My Disney Experience app or Disney’s website closer to your visit.

Dapper Dans on Main Street USA Magic Kingdom

  • Shops, including the massive Emporium, where your wallet goes to cry.
  • Main Street Vehicles for a vintage ride straight down the avenue.
  • The Dapper Dans, who may or may not be recruiting for a barbershop quartet (we’re practicing just in case).

What’s Coming Next at Magic Kingdom

Because Disney never truly finishes a park—it just runs out of room… temporarily.

Magic Kingdom is charging full steam ahead into the future with new lands, bold expansions, and one sparkly new nighttime spectacular that promises to leave us weeping happily into our Mickey pretzels. Whether you’re a fan of the wicked, the wheelie, or the whimsical, there’s a little something brewing for everyone.

Confirmed and Rumoured Changes

  • Frontierland is transforming: With Tiana’s Bayou Adventure replacing Splash Mountain and the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade already packed away, expect this area to continue shifting as part of a wider thematic refresh.
  • Country Bear Jamboree: Closed in early 2024, this classic is currently being reimagined with a new show inspired by Nashville-style musical revues, set to open summer 2024.
  • Tom Sawyer Island & Liberty Belle Riverboat: Both are expected to close permanently later in 2025 to make way for the Cars land expansion and Villains expansion and infrastructure changes in Frontierland. (Dates not officially confirmed—stay tuned!)
  • Cinderella Castle mural refurbishment: Scheduled for early 2026, but this won’t affect access to the castle or shows. It’s mostly behind-the-scenes magic.
  • Starlight Café updates: Internal seating upgrades and mobile order optimisation planned for late 2025, with no known full closures.

Villains Land

Embrace Your Dark Side

It’s finally happening. For decades, fans have whispered, dreamed, and dropped not so subtle hints (looking at you, Halloween fans) about a land dedicated to Disney’s baddest baddies. Now, Disney is preparing to deliver a delightfully dark corner of the park that will be equal parts menacing and magical.

From concept art and early buzz, Villains Land is shaping up to be the most diabolical expansion yet and it’s in the best way possible. Here’s what’s bubbling in the cauldron:

  • A Maleficent-themed outdoor roller coaster, complete with fire effects, cursed thorns, and twists that would make even Hades raise an eyebrow.
  • A dark ride journey through the shadowy lairs of Disney’s most notorious villains—think Ursula, Dr. Facilier, Scar, and more. This is one ride where you’ll definitely want to sit in the back row.
  • Goth-glam dining and sinister souvenir shops, with merchandise so stylish it might just make you root for the bad guys.

No opening date has been confirmed, but insiders suggest this land could be part of the park’s longer-term expansion into the space beyond Big Thunder Mountain, so grab your crystal ball and start plotting your villainous wardrobe now.

Lily Belle Mickey Raidroad at Magic Kingdom

Cars Land

Start Your Engines

Ka-chow! Lightning McQueen and the gang are getting their own pit stop in Magic Kingdom as Disney looks to recreate the success of Cars Land in Disneyland, but with an Orlando twist.

This new land will whisk guests off to the dusty streets of Radiator Springs, where tailpipes, tumbleweeds, and torque reign supreme. Expect:

  • An off-road rally style attraction, with guests riding in rugged all-terrain vehicles over bumpy paths, geyser filled canyons, and scenic vistas, like if Test Track took a detour through the Wild West.
  • A family friendly ride, potentially with Tow Mater or Luigi as your guide, perfect for younger racers and those prone to motion sickness.
  • Route 66-themed eateries and merch spots, where Flo’s V8 Café might serve up some all new eats, and you can finally get that “Rust-eze” bumper sticker you never knew you needed.

While not yet officially confirmed by Disney, multiple permits and land development plans suggest something big and four-wheeled will be headed to Magic Kingdom’s horizon.

Disney Starlight Parade

Dream the Night Away

Coming Summer 2025, the skies (and streets) of Magic Kingdom are getting a glow up. Say goodbye to early exits and hello to Disney Starlight, the new nighttime parade that promises to shine brighter than Genie after three espressos.

This long-awaited successor to Main Street Electrical Parade and Paint the Night will feature:

  • Dazzling illuminated floats, starring characters from Peter Pan, Encanto, Frozen, Moana, Coco, and other fan favourites.
  • State-of-the-art lighting and projection tech, turning the parade into a moving light show synced to a brand-new musical score that’s equal parts catchy and tear-inducing.
  • Interactive elements, rumoured to include wearable tech or MagicBand+ triggers to light up with the parade. Yes, your wrist might sparkle along with Elsa.

Expect big crowds, bigger emotions, and the kind of nighttime finale that will have you hugging your party and saying, “Okay… that was worth the wait.”

Known Ride Downtimes

Here are the upcoming planned ride closures we know of:

  • Jungle Cruise: Partial closure for dock updates in January 2026. Boats will still run, but expect slower boarding.
  • Haunted Mansion: Minor refurbishment and tech enhancements expected mid-2026, likely a short 2-week downtime.

As with all things Disney, these timelines are subject to change faster than a Lightning Lane Passes disappearing at 7:01am, so be sure to check the official app or our [Lightning Lane Guide] before your visit.
